First phase of artificial reef construction in northwest Florida now complete

The construction phase for the Florida Artificial Reef Creation and Restoration project has been completed. This project involved the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) coordinating with local coastal governments to deploy prefabricated artificial reef modules within permitted locations in the Gulf of Mexico, offshore of northwest Florida between Pensacola and Mexico Beach. FWC partnered with six municipalities to complete this project: Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, and Bay counties and the City of Mexico Beach. This approximately $11.5 million project was funded with Deepwater Horizon Natural Resource Damage Assessment Phase III Early Restoration funds.

Panama City Beach, Fla. – Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that more than $111 million has been awarded to 22 communities through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s (DEO) Rebuild Florida General Infrastructure Repair Program for communities impacted by Hurricane Michael. The program, administered by DEO, is designed to provide funding for local governments to strategically rebuild and harden infrastructure in order to prevent or reduce losses from future disasters.
“Hurricane Michael caused catastrophic damage to Northwest Florida and we remain one-hundred percent committed to helping these communities rebuild and recover stronger than before,” said Governor DeSantis. “This Rebuild Florida funding will provide local governments with critical resources to harden their infrastructure and ensure that these communities are as prepared as possible for future disasters.”

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WWSB) - More than $111 million has been awarded to 22 communities in the Panhandle that suffered damage from Hurricane Michael in 2018.
The Rebuild Florida General Infrastructure Repair Program is designed to provide funding for local governments to strategically rebuild and harden infrastructure in order to prevent or reduce losses from future disasters.
Michael hit the Gulf Coast 25 miles east of Panama City on Oct. 10, 2018, as a Category 5 storm, the first such storm to strike the U.S. mainland since Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
“Hurricane Michael caused catastrophic damage to Northwest Florida and we remain 100% committed to helping these communities rebuild and recover stronger than before,” DeSantis said. “This Rebuild Florida funding will provide local governments with critical resources to harden their infrastructure and ensure that these communities are as prepared as possible for future disasters.”
With the largest portion of the funds, Panama City Beach plans to combine stormwater outfalls near Lullwater Lake and the Calypso Resort and Towers to channel stormwater underground and deposit it about 1,500 feet into the Gulf of Mexico.
The project was sparked by beach erosion during Hurricane Michael, which caused the blockage and submersion of outfalls responsible for transporting stormwater from the area, a press release from the city said.
