Evacuation order lifted following fiery Iowa derailment

By The Associated Press, AP SIBLEY, Iowa (AP) An evacuation order that was issued for part of a northwest Iowa town following a fiery weekend train derailment has been lifted, authorities said. The order for part of Sibley was lifted Monday evening, allowing the 80 to 100 people who had to leave their homes after Sunday’s derailment to return, City Administrator Glenn Anderson said. The city was fortunate that no injuries were reported after the derailment, which caused minimal damage to private property in the area, Anderson said Tuesday. The town of about 3,000 people is located roughly 200 miles (322 kilometers) northwest of Des Moines.

A Union Pacific train carrying hydrochloric acid, potassium hydroxide and asphalt derailed Sunday near Sibley, Iowa, catching fire and airing toxic fumes. Sibley City Administrator Glenn Anderson says it s unknown how long cleanup will take as toxic tar is now fueling the fire. The tar is dripping more than it s pouring out, so the drip just feeds the fire enough to flare it up and put it back down, but there s other chemicals out there, as I understand, I don t know which ones they are, but they don t want them to intervene and [sic] intertwine, said Anderson.
