BCSD considers adopting ethnic studies: 'This is embarking on something big' | News

The board for the Bakersfield City School District this week opened a discussion about implementing ethnic studies in the district. It’s not the first time board members or administrators broached the idea, but it was the first serious discussion about actually adopting a formal resolution in ethnic studies. “This is embarking on something big,” said Superintendent Doc Ervin. “We can do it. It’s not going to be a problem. We just have to be patient.” Deputy superintendent Mark Luque said BCSD teachers have been asking for the district to adopt ethnic studies. But Tuesday night s discussion was prompted by a letter from Kern County Educators for Ethnic Studies. The group is asking for the district to adopt a resolution by the end of the school year with a clear and comprehensive vision for the implementation of ethnic studies.

New board members sworn in at local school boards

December marks a changing of the guard for local school boards. Tuesday was a particularly momentous day after an election season that attracted more candidates and more attention. New trustees were sworn in for the boards of the Kern Community College District, the Bakersfield City School District, Rosedale Union School District and Panama-Buena Vista School District.  Yovani Jimenez, 29, a case manager for Clinica Sierra Vista, was sworn into the board of the Kern Community College District. Jimenez will represent Area 6, a newly-rezoned area that stretches from south Kern County to Lake Isabella. Jimenez is a resident and native of Lamont, the son of an immigrant and a first-generation college student. He says he knows first-hand the importance of education in the area he represents.
