AT A BETTER TIME. Reporter: THE FULTONDALE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAS OPERATED AS A VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT SINCE 1948, BUT FIRE CHIEF SAYS IN RECENT YEARS, IT WAS GETTING TO BE TOO MUCH. OUR VOLUNTEERS GET BURNED OUT. REPORTER: WHEN THE MAYOR TOOK OFFICE IN THE FALL, HE VOWED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. HE HAS BEEN A FIREFIGHTER SINCE 1985 AND HE KNOWS WHAT A DIFFERENCE A FULL-TIME STAFF CAN MAKE. I MADE A PROMISE WHEN I BECAME MAYOR THAT IS ONE OF THE THINGS I WOULD DO. FULTONDALE, Ala. (WBRC) - Fultondale is in recovery mode following a tornado that ripped through the small community Monday night.
The cityâs fire chief said there is still a lot of work that needs to be done in Fultondale following that storm, and theyâre going to need committed volunteers for the foreseeable future.
âWe have volunteers coming in by the hundreds, but we also know that this is a long-term process,â said Fire Chief Justin McKenzie. ....

Alabama tornado demolishes homes, killing 1 person and injuring dozens in the Birmingham area
What used to be homes are now mangled piles of debris, with personal belongings strewn across lawns and streets.
That’s the new reality near Birmingham, Alabama, after a “large and extremely dangerous” tornado late Monday night annihilated parts of Jefferson County.
The storm killed at least one person and injured dozens more, officials said. The twister also ripped a hotel apart and tore off part of a church’s roof.
About 30 people in Fultondale were injured, the city’s fire chief said Tuesday morning.
“Seventeen patients were tak(en) to the ER, with various injuries and some critical,” Fire Chief Justin McKenzie said. At least 11 people were treated on the scene. ....
