DECATUR â The early morning chill was considerably warmed at Friday s WSOY Community Food Drive when radio personality Brian Byers made the announcement that Archer Daniels Midland Co. had just donated $100,000. âEven though they re a global company, like every business, they ve felt the effects of COVID-19,â Byers said to his radio audience. Employees donated and the company matched their donations through ADM Cares. The giving kept coming and by the end of the day more than $600,000 was collected, which is equivalent to 3.2 million pounds of food. The amount doubled last year s total of 1.6 million pounds. The scene at the Airport Plaza Kroger was much different than past years. No semitrucks full of food, no fork trucks, no army of volunteers. Because of COVID-19, only monetary donations were accepted. ....
The scene at area food giveaways plays out much the same regardless of the location lines form hours ahead of time and the food inevitably runs out. That happened in Beardstown on Nov. 21 when the Central Illinois Foodbank teamed with Mount Sterling-based Dot Food Inc. Because of traffic volume, the giveaway started an hour early and led foodbank partner resource coordinator Sarah Bermingham to surmise that no matter how much food it brings, we seem to always run out. I think definitely it is a reminder of the situation we re in, said Beth Wakefield, the foodbank s public relations manager. With everything that s gone on this past year, some of the things that we have faced have been magnified by the pandemic. I would say food insecurity is one of them. ....

Staff Report The Central Illinois Foodbank is having several food giveaways over the next couple of weeks. The giveaways are in downtown Jacksonville, 215 W. Lafayette Ave., at 3 p.m. Friday; at the Beardstown Elks Lodge, 205 S Second St., at 10 a.m. Saturday; and at the Rushville Public Library, 514 Maple Ave., at 1 p.m. Dec. 28. The food giveaways are open to everyone. There are no financial eligibility requirements. Participants are asked to wear a mask and clear a space in the trunk or back seat to ensure safety. The food bank will operate at sites until supplies run out. ....
