Pritzker announces expansion of food benefits for struggling families SPRINGFIELD, Ill.- One million kids across Illinois will now have access to food through a pandemic assistance program. That’s 200,000 more eligible children receiving meals than last year. Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced qualifying families will receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer card mailed home for each eligible child next month. The card gives families $6.82 each day their child doesn’t have access to a school lunch because of the pandemic. Pritzker said this is a big opportunity for families to get the help they need. In the coming weeks, families will receive one EBT card per eligible child, and the cards can be used to purchase food items at authorized retailers, which includes most major grocery stores in Illinois. Families will receive $6.82 for each day a child did not have access to school meals, a 19% increase over the 2019-2020 school year. The funding will be distributed by the Illinois Department of Human Services in partnership wit the Illinois State Board of Education to students who are eligible for Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer support. ....
Food distribution event set FacebookTwitterEmail Passavant Area Hospital’s Healthy Jacksonville collaborative will partner with other groups to provide a drive-through food distribution event. It will start at 3 p.m. Friday at Spirit of Faith Soup Kitchen, 105 E. Dunlap St. No pre-registration is required, but those participating should wear a face covering and clear space in the trunk of their vehicle so volunteers can safely load food.
