Parking Officials Vote 4-0 To Recommend Keeping Permit Fees Flat

Center School Lot   Commission Chair Keith Richey and members Peter Ogilvie, Laura Budd and Jennifer Donovan voted 4-0 in favor of the recommendations. The Commission has one open seat. Regarding fees at the commuter lots, Richey said the town should “leave it alone in view of the recovery from the COVID crisis.” As it is, the town has already extended the parking permits for those lots Lumberyard, Richmond Hill and Talmadge Hill through March 31 and also suspended metered parking in those lots through month’s end. (The selectmen are expected to take up the question of whether to continue those extensions through June 30.)

Letters to the Editor | NewCanaanite.com

I am writing to support the Board of Education budget as proposed which includes a change for healthy school start times for all our children. I am the mother of four children, a 15-year-old New Canaan High School freshman, an 11-year-old in 5th grade at Saxe, a 5-year-old in kindergarten at South and a 3-year-old enjoying another year at home with me. I will be in the New Canaan public school system for 14 more years. This past fall I transitioned three children to three new schools. Like many of us, I am regularly dealing with changes to schedules; having children in quarantine, attending school in person, remotely, morning kindergarten, hybrid 2-day a week schedule, hybrid 75% schedule, every other Wednesday, half day Wednesdays, it has been quite the year for all of us. I actually say that last sentence with a big smile on my face, because, thanks to [Superintendent of Schools] Dr. [Bryan] Luizzi, my children have enjoyed a significant amount of in-person full time learnin

'A Busy and Vital Community Center for New Canaan': Library Files Rebuilding Project-Related Applications with P&Z

An overhead view of the proposed new library. Specs by Turner After years of planning, New Canaan Library last week filed applications with Planning & Zoning that are designed to allow the organization to build a new glass-and-stone exterior facility that features an auditorium, outdoor terrace, café and public concourse, and reimagines use of its gateway block to the downtown. The 42,641-square-foot facility’s contemporary design “builds on New Canaan’s legacy of mid-century architecture and site planning and expresses its purpose as a principal community institution,” according to a Feb. 26 application to the Planning & Zoning Commission from attorney Ted O’Hanlan of Stamford-based Robinson+Cole.

Moynihan: Town Has Solved Problem of Shop, Restaurant and Office Workers Parking on Main and Elm

A parking experiment that grew out of the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be solving a problem that long has vexed municipal officials. New Canaan has tried several ways in recent years to get those who work in offices, shops and restaurants downtown to park in paid lots rather than taking up free on-street parking in the heart of the business district that’s designed to serve shoppers and diners. Four years ago, the town launched a new program where employees of local businesses could get special permits for the Morse Court or Park Street Lots, and some have suggested installing meters on Main and Elm Streets.

'I'm Kind of Scratching My Head': Councilmen Question 1913 Building-Related Clause in Draft Agreement Between Town, Library

The Board of Selectmen created new problems for New Canaan Library and its estimated $35 million rebuilding plan by reopening questions regarding preservation of its original 1913 building without the organization’s knowledge, members of the town’s legislative body said last week. Last March, the Town Council voted down a motion that would have effectively halted […]
