Mary Castle Elementary, learning center closed after shooting Friday

An elementary school and early learning center in the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township were closed Monday after a shooting on school property last week, the district said. Both Mary Castle Elementary School and ELC Mary Castle were closed after the domestic incident in which an estranged family member shot a woman outside the early learning center about 1 p.m. Friday, according to the district and police.  The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and no children were hurt in the incident, according to a police report.  An alert posted to the Lawrence Township schools webpage Monday morning said students should not attend school Monday and noted there would be no virtual instruction.

In the pandemic, field trips go virtual

MINNEAPOLIS — During their planetarium field trip, the third-graders from Castle Elementary School in Oakdale, Minn., had plenty on their minds. Is there any water on the moon? Which is the coldest planet, and the hottest one? What is a black hole? Would you freeze to death on Mars? Kaitlin Ehret, the Bell Museum planetarium educator leading the field trip, smiled as the students peppered her with more questions — in the “chat” window of a Zoom call. One by one, she called on them in the way they’ve become accustomed to this year: by telling them she would un-mute them so they could share their thoughts with the class.
