Free turkey dinners to be provided to more than 400 DeSoto County families

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties and the Louis and Gloria Flanzer Philanthropic Trust are partnering to provide a complete holiday meal to DeSoto County families in need on Dec. 23. 
The groups will distribute more than 400 full holiday meals, which include a precooked turkey and all of the sides, in the Louis and Gloria Flanzer Boys & Girls Club parking lot, 18 School Avenue, Arcadia, from 2 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Preregistered families from the Louis and Gloria Flanzer Boys & Girls Club, Arcadia Housing Authority, Redlands Christian Migrant Association, Casa San Juan Bosco and seniors at St. John Paul II Villas will participate in the drive-thru donation event. ....

DeSoto County migrant farm families lack basic digital access


The migrant farmer families who live at Casa San Juan Bosco in DeSoto County work year-round to put food on Floridians’ tables.
Oranges, tomatoes and strawberries are the main produce they provide, and they do it for a median income of $18,000 a year. The affordable housing community, hosted by Catholic Charities, helps the 426 residents afford to live a sustainable life, even though they make low wages. 
Before COVID-19, both parents in the households often went to work while their children went to school and participated in Catholic Charities’ after-school programs, which were suspended this year because of the pandemic.
Even though DeSoto schools have reopened, many of the families don t feel safe sending their children to in-person learning, so one parent often stays home to oversee virtual schooling. This cuts their income in half and presents new challenges. ....
