Local Roundup: Thetford-Rivendell softball gains first win of season

THETFORD Thetford-Rivendell softball trailed Twin Valley 9-3 after two innings at home on Thursday. But after a pep talk from head coach Jesse Soulia, the Panthers made a big comeback and won 26-14 for their first victory of the season.
The Panthers (1-3) scored 10 runs in the third to spark that comeback.
“Tonight, I watched my team come together and support each other on and off the field,” Soulia said. “Players playing in places that they had not played before. Hits were contagious tonight and I surely enjoyed seeing all the smiles.”

HUDSON, N.H. Hanover boys tennis (5-2) won its third straight match, this time a 6-3 overtaking of Alvirne on the road.
HHS went 5-1 in singles matches. Junior Evan Yang (8-3), junior Kevin Pillsbury (8-5), sophomore Zhiwen Liu (8-2), senior Alex Stevens (8-3), and junior Charlie Birkmeyer (8-0) emerged victorious.
Hanover head coach Jarrod Shaheen spoke highly of Alvirne’s sportsmanship before praising his team’s performance.
“Evan had no trouble taking a win at the top of the ladder, and Kevin played a hard-fought match that was back and forth until he pulled away at the end. His hustle was incredible,” Hanover head coach Jarrod Shaheen said. “Zhiwen, Alex S., and Charlie rounded out very nice performances down the ladder to clinch the win. At doubles, Alex S. and Kevin played a phenomenal match against an athletic team to eke it out in the end.”

WEARE, N.H. Lebanon High girls lacrosse took advantage of a John Stark team on break and missing three players to win, 17-3, on Friday.
Lebanon (2-2) was led by a strong game by junior Kayla Taber, who scored two goals and assisted three more. Junior Catherine Cole and freshman Maddie Jewell each scored three goals and recorded one assist. Junior Molly Smith finished with two goals and assisted two more. Senior Sydney Gonyea chipped in two goals and one assist.
Senior goalie Lena Nowell saved 12 shots, including all nine John Stark shots in the second half.

BRISTOL, Vt. The Hartford High boys lacrosse team shook off two year’s worth of rust to open the season with an 8-3 victory at Mount Abraham-Vergennes on Saturday.
The Hurricanes used a suffocating defense to limit the hosts all afternoon. A balanced offensive attack proved more than sufficient on the other end of the field. Carter Nalette had a team-best three points on two goals and an assist for Hartford.
Gordon Willey and Chris Pierce each had a pair of goals for the Canes. Joe Barwood had a goal and one assist. Ezra Mock added a goal, and Bentley Boonyaharn had an assist.
