Food waste makes up 30% to 40% of the food supply in the United States. It is also the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills and represents nourishment that could have helped feed families in need, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
One common reason food is tossed is appearance. Part of our food cost is people go through the grocery store and they want the prettiest apple, and then they think they have to buy organic, which frankly is just a marketing term, said Blake Metcalf, clinical nutrition manager for Baptist Health in Fort Smith and Van Buren.
