freight train derailment. 1000 feet of track, railroad ties, the third rail and two switches. railroad officials hope to have it restored by this evening s rush-hour but that is clearly not going to happen. the delays and cancellations will affect nearly tens of thousands of commuters over the next few hours. we call this the main line and this line feeds both the port jervis branch and the ron port jefferson branch and the ronkonkoma branch and those taken together will take half of the ridership on the long island railroad. reporter: this contingency plan just went into effect. if you re in penn station tonight, there will be eastbound service and you will be able to get out to long island but there will be cancellations roughly 1/3 of the evening schedule out of penn station is going to be cancelled, and there will be no service into new york city on the ronkonkoma and port jeff branches. the advice, get to the babylon branch or the fort washington branch because tho
