N a slow-paced, low-scoring affair, the Hickman Kewpies got it done on offense when it mattered to grab the title of the Jefferson Bank Holiday Hoops Classic with a 41-30 victory Friday night against the Jefferson City Lady Jays at Capital City High School.
The win gives the Kewpies their third Classic title and first since 2014.
When the Jefferson City Lady Jays broke the huddle during a timeout with :05.8 on the clock, Hannah Linthacum took her spot on the right block, awaiting the in-bounds play. The Lady Jays’ 6-foot-4 senior center had a sly smile on her face. She knew exactly what was coming. The only question was, could the St. Joseph Benton Lady Cardinals stop it from happening? They couldn’t.
It wasn’t the shot the Helias Lady Crusaders wanted. But it was Plan B that won it. Mikah Edwards hit a layup with :02.5 left Wednesday to lift Helias to a 42-41 victory against Staley in the opening round of the Jefferson Bank Holiday Hoops Classic at Capital City High School.
After an 11-day layoff since their last game, there was rust to be expected Wednesday night for the Jefferson City Lady Jays.
But it did not take long for the Lady Jays to get going, as they jumped out to a big lead early and rode it to a 56-37 victory against the Oxford, Miss., Lady Chargers in the opening round of the Jefferson Bank Holiday Hoops Classic at Capital City High School.
Last season, the Helias Lady Crusaders used the Jefferson Bank Holiday Hoops Classic as a springboard to the Class 4 Final Four. This season, the Lady Crusaders are looking to use the Classic as a chance to continue a great start.
