good morning and welcome to the saturday edition of morning joe weekend. it was a really busy week. let s get to some of the conversations you may have missed. gag order in donald trump s hush money case is an effect, but his attorney said, they will keep fighting to get it thrown out. that comes after new york s top court declined to hear trump s appeal of the matter earlier this week. the state court appealed trump s thing, there was no constitutional grounds for the appeal. that leaves the gag order imposed by judge juan mershon in place meaning, he could still face penalties in place for violating it. the order bars trump from going after witnesses, jurors, and others who were involved in the case. following his felony conviction last month, the sentencing is scheduled for july 11th. so, i guess first of all, do you expect this gag order to be put back before the sentencing? i don t, but maybe there is reason for it. and then, what do you expect for the sentencing?
To meet slirvirtually with goves to talk about resettling refugees from afghanistan. that has been cancelled. the briefings have been delayed. a lot is fluid as they re monitoring the situation, monitoring what has happened to service members on the ground, what is going on with the afghan allies still standing out sside the gate. president biden spent the morning in the situation room monitoring with top aides. several aides are calling lawmakers to talk to them about what they know. senate majority leader schumer said in his first statement since the attack happened that he has spoken with lloyd austin. essentially a lot of communication is happening right now. it is not clear if we will hear from the president at some point today. i imagine it is on a broad rang of options the white house is considering. but oren is right, what has to come next are decisions in
the president stopped short of calling lawmakers back to capitol hill to take up legislation. rich edson reporting live from new jersey where the president is set to arrive this afternoon. rich? the president said this time can be different, that congress can pass legislation after two mass shootings last weekend. that on top of congressional democrats and republicans and the national rifle association, he says he can convince his base. we passed background checks a number of times, meaning the democrats. everybody knew they weren t that strong. i think meaningful background checks are a real positive. politically i can t tell you. i don t know. good bad, indifferent. i don t care politically. i don t want to have crazy people having guns. top congressional democrats, nancy pelosi, chuck schumer say
Jim acosta at the white house, thank you. let s bring in pamela brown. we re also learning the president has been obsessed with his former fixer and lawyer michael cohen, fuming about his constantly. what are you learning? that s right. our reporting shows that michael cohen and his testimony and all the fallout surrounding it has really been getting under the president s skin. he has been distracted by it. just minutes after national security meetings, president trump has been bringing up cohen and his testimony, after calling lawmakers, he will bring it up. it seems to be constantly on his mind. not only that, wolf, but our reporting shows that even in hanoi when he was there for the summit around the same time as the testimony, the president was bringing it up there. he was upset a reporter asked him about cohen and on the way home on air force one, once again the president was fixated on cohen, bringing it up. clearly, this got under his skin. cohen is one of the only associate
They release to the reporters publicly, but what this shows is someone feels so strongly about how the president is spending his time that they leaked every day this schedule for dozens of days to a reporter outside the white house, essentially detailing what the president does. now, our reporting has shown that during this executive time, essentially the president gets up in the morning as you know from his twitter feed, he s tweeting. he reads through all the newspapers, the washington post, the new york times. he s watching television. sometimes what played out the night before. sometimes he s watching it live as you can tell from what he s tweeting. there s also a time when he s calling staffers, calling his chief of staff, other aides inside the white house. sometimes they go over to the residence, themselves, to meet with the president before he comes to the oval office around noon then back when he s in the residence after the work day is over, around 6:00 or so, that s when
