The Fatima Lady Comets would like to remind everyone no lead is safe until the final out is made. That lesson earned themselves a softball state championship Saturday afternoon. Trailing by nine runs at the end of two innings against the Chillicothe Lady Hornets, the Lady Comets scored 10 unanswered runs, and after losing a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, they had two more runs cross the plate in the eighth inning. Those final two runs were the deciding factor, among many other key moments along the way, that gave Fatima a 16-14 victory against Chillicothe in the Class 3 state title game at Killian Softball Complex.
There wasn’t much offense in the first three innings for the Fatima Lady Comets. By the end of the game, there was plenty of offense to make up for those early innings. The Lady Comets punctuated their first Final Four appearance in seven years with a seven-run seventh inning Friday afternoon, as they cruised to a 13-0 victory against Westminster Christian in the Class 3 state semifinals at Killian Softball Complex.
Camryn Sharp hit a pair of home runs Tuesday for the Capital City Lady Cavaliers, but that’s all they would get against Fatima pitcher Taylor Baumhoer. The Lady Comets scored the game’s first six runs and Baumhoer struck out seven, as they came away with an 8-2 win against Capital City.
