Only about one-third of New Jersey schools are fully in-person as of this week, as Gov. Phil Murphy pushes all of the state’s schools to reopen and sharply criticized the 15 districts that have remained totally virtual.
As of May 4, 450 school districts were hybrid, 15 were remote and 298 were fully in-person the sixth week in a row the number of in-person districts increased. Forty-eight districts have different educational formats for different schools.

Most Sussex County public schools switched to fully remote learning schedules just before Thanksgiving and expected to reopen in mid-January.
Due to an increase in COVID-19 cases, the plan has changed for some districts that have opted to extend the remote instruction.
The Newton school district announced Friday that it will remain fully remote through at least next week after originally planning to resume in-person learning Tuesday.
The district was one of several in the county, including Sparta and Vernon, that decided in November to continue their virtual plan until two weeks after the regularly scheduled winter break.

As the temperature began to fall in recent weeks, students dreamed of snow days and parents wondered if they were a thing of the past due to COVID-19 and remote learning.
All Sussex County schools have taken part in some form of remote learning during the 2020-21 school year, which naturally begs the question: would the traditional day off become obsolete?
No, said John Fritzky, superintendent of the Byram Township School District.
In an announcement on Facebook Wednesday afternoon, Fritzky delighted many in the school community. We all know this year has been difficult, and this upcoming snowstorm may be a gift for all of our students to step away from their computers and go outside and play in the snow, Fritzky posted. The only thing we are asking you to do is go outside and enjoy the snow. Make snow angels, snow forts, and sledding trails. Take pictures and share them to remind us
