Lavu abandons Downtown digs

Copyright © 2021 Albuquerque Journal Lavu Inc. vacated its luxury suite Downtown this week for a much smaller Uptown space after facing financial difficulties in the pandemic. The company’s new 3,000-square-foot office is nearly six times smaller than the 17,700-square-foot space it previously leased at the U.S. Eagle Building next to Albuquerque’s Central Plaza. It moved into that Downtown space only two years ago, backed by state approval of up to $270,000 in Local Economic Development Act funding and much fanfare by local officials celebrating the success of the homegrown technology startup. ...................... But the pandemic has severely cut into company revenues since March, leading to a major reduction in staff, which conflicts with its LEDA funding, plus difficulties paying its monthly rent Downtown.

The money to help with payroll and other bills was first-come, first-serve, and Hawaiians feared big mainland banks could get all the money first.

County wants state to repay allegedly misspent spaceport tax revenue, cover future costs

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... LAS CRUCES – The county is calling on the state to provide “adequate funding” to operations at Spaceport America and to stop relying on excess gross receipts tax revenue to cover its operational costs. The move comes on the heels of a forensic audit report which accused the spaceport’s former director, Dan Hicks, of misusing tax dollars among other allegations of violating criminal and administrative statutes. At its Dec. 8 meeting, the Doña Ana County Commission unanimously approved a resolution that calls on the state to stop allowing excess GRT revenue to pay for spaceport expenses the county argues it had not pledged to cover.
