Louisiana Sets Up $30M Buyout Program for Flood-Prone Lake Charles Neighborhood May 23, 2021
Louisiana is offering a $30 million voluntary buyout program to residents of a neighborhood that has flooded three times in recent years, Gov. John Bel Edwards said on May 21.
Recent rains brought the latest floods to the Greinwich Terrace neighborhood in Lake Charles, a city which was hit by Hurricanes Laura and Delta last year and Harvey in 2017.
“This program gives our residents a reason to be optimistic about the future, no matter how painful the present,” Mayor Nic Hunter said in a news release from the governor’s office.
Edwards said officials will pay for the program out of a $1.2 billion federal flood mitigation grant.
The Greinwich Terrace neighborhood of Lake Charles in southwest Louisiana has flooded three times over the past four years, including during this weekâs heavy rain, according to the announcement. The new program falls under the Louisiana Watershed Initiativeâs federally approved
action plan for flood mitigation, and more buyouts could be forthcoming, officials said.
âAs we continue to press the federal government for additional recovery funds following hurricanes Laura and Delta, we have been working with impacted communities to provide immediate relief to our residents and fund projects that align with federal grant requirements and our stateâs long-term resilience objectives,â Edwards said in a prepared statement. âThrough the Louisiana Watershed Initiative, we are working to address the needs of communities throughout the state with projects like

CPPJ president delivers resolution to Pres. Biden

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Brian Abshire, Calcasieu Parish Police Jury President, hand delivered a copy of a resolution to Pres. Biden asking for federal supplemental appropriations for hurricane recovery, according to the police jury.
The police jury says during President Joe Biden’s visit to Lake Charles Thursday, Abshire personally delivered a copy of a resolution in support of Gov. John Bel Edwards’ supplemental appropriations request to fund recovery efforts from Hurricanes Laura and Delta.
“It was an honor to meet with President Biden at such a critical time in our disaster recovery process,” Abshire said. “It was also an opportunity to formally advocate, on behalf of our community, for timely federal disaster funding, in addition to major infrastructure needs, like the I-10 bridge replacement project.”
