The administration of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva should rally legislators to approve the Escazú Agreement, more than X Brazilian and international organizations said today in a letter to Institutional Relations Minister Alexandre Padilha. The regional agreement protects the rights to access to information and public participation in decision-making processes on environmental matters and contains specific provisions for protecting environmental human rights defenders.
“There is a so-called ‘misery mafia’ that profits from the good faith of the people and this is neither ethical nor moral. Fr. Julio is a real pimp of misery in São Paulo,” a city council member told newspaper O Globo.
Latin American and Caribbean countries are meeting next week in Argentina for the second meeting of the countries that have ratified of the Escazu Agreement – COP2, a treaty that seeks to protect the environment and its defenders. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva should use the opportunity of this conference as a backdrop to send the treaty to the National Congress and engage in a forceful effort to ensure legislators approve it.
