Last week I mentioned some professional athletes who realize the current global pandemic is bigger than sports and they have become more than a sports hero – they have become real life heroes.
The definition of a hero has changed throughout time. The Merriam-Webster dictionary displays a few definitions for a hero, including “a person admired for achievements and noble qualities,” and “one who shows great courage.”

I think an athlete can be classified as a sports hero on the playing field, but to be considered a real life hero an athlete needs to continue their charity work, which many of them do, or continue working in the general public for the greater good of humankind long after their playing days are behind them.
