Woodstock grandfather killed by fleeing 'gas-and-dash' vehicle

It’s yet another example of the need for new laws requiring gas prepayment, industry advocates say.
“The safety of the customers and employees is first and foremost,” said Dave Bryans of the Ontario Convenience Store Association, which represents more than 6,000 stores and gas stations provincewide. “One death is one death too many over gas purchasing.”
Bryans said his association has been lobbying for a prepayment law since at least 2012 after two gas station employees were killed. Since then, Bryans said his association has garnered the support of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and many other police departments for gas prepayment, already law in British Columbia and Alberta. ....

Charges upgraded against accused after hit-and-run victim dies

Charges have been upgraded against a Drumbo man after the victim in a hit-and-run crash died earlier this month.
Woodstock police have now charged Brandon Harmer, 26, of Drumbo with manslaughter. Harmer had previously been charged with failing to stop and criminal negligence related to an April 24 crash in Woodstock.

Police reported a 66-year-old man was allegedly hit by a vehicle when its driver tried to leave a gas station without paying for fuel. At the time, police said the victim’s injuries were life-threatening. The victim – who has not been named by police – died May 5. ....
