but why the flare up now? all of these things are interconnected, and that s why it s really dangerous right now. so the big question now is, could this red sea conflict become the next war in the middle east? first of all, let s start by looking at what has actually been happening in the red sea. in mid november, 2023, the houthis, an iranian backed rebel group in yemen, began targeting commercial shipping off their coast. so, who exactly are the houthis and what is it motivating them? the houthis, who are a so called rebel group in yemen, they hail from the north west of yemen. they have been very active in this area for about a decade. it s only now that we re noticing because our global trade is being impacted. they hijacked this ship called the galaxy leader and they fired missiles and drones at others. us and british warships went to their defence. the houthis vowed revenge. the world economy, every economy will suffer if ships keep coming under attack in this illegal

bill: impact segment tonight, the group human rights watch heavily invested in making sure people all over the world are not abused. as you may know the u.n. directive allows action against libya in order to protect civilians from qaddafi s goons. joining us from washington the director of the middle east and north african rights. do you support the military action on behalf of the civilians in libya? what we support are actions taken by the international community to protect civilians. obviously the international community has used a variety of means to try to do that including military action. we recognize there is a great interest in protecting the civil yaps of libya from qaddafi s forces and so we think it s a positive measure that the international community is taking direct action to uphold responsibility. bill: that s interesting. human rights watch doesn t have any beef with this action because you do truly believe that civilians were in danger from qaddafi. why do you b
Why do you believe they were in danger? some people don t. well, we have been monitoring human rights conditions in libya for many, many years. i think we have issued more publications, more research, nor analysis on the human rights conditions on libya than just about anyone else. we are aware of the very, very serious situation on the ground. libyans government is one of the most repressive in the world. there are no freedoms whatsoever really. and we have seen the government use a very harsh hand against those who come up against it or criticize it. they are disappearances, torture, execution, arbitrary arrest. prolonged detentions without trial. sham trials. and, of course, as we seen very recently in february. shooting at point blank against those who are peacefulfully protesting. bill: so is he a monster, you know it and i know it i hope people watching will be convinced of that. now, there is also a terror component here. you know the 190 americans who
