High school student Bodhi Kolwaite noticed an increase of “blue lives matter” imagery in his town of Weymouth, Massachusetts, and decided to do something about it. Since the recent uprisings against police brutality across the country, he noticed the imagery adorning classroom walls, football games and even the masks of some teachers. Kolwaite began by creating a petition to call for their removal.
“For years now our school system has had this ‘blue lives’ flag which propped up as a direct opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement has been paraded around at our school,” Kolwaite reported to Liberation News. “Due to the murder of George Floyd and the protests that sparked, a group of students and I felt as though it was about time to take this hateful symbolism out of our place of learning. Should Weymouth High School take down ‘Thin Blue Line’ flag? School officials discuss ‘complex issues’ as community debates

Weymouth school officials met this week to discuss the “thin blue line” flag and other pro-police symbols at the high school that have sparked social media debate and dueling petitions by students calling for their removal amid a push for racial justice and those demanding they remain in honor of the late Police Sgt. Michael Chesna and other fallen officers.
“We understand the differing perspectives surrounding modern social topics and the resulting profound emotions and feelings,” Jennifer Curtis-Whipple, superintendent of the school district, said in a statement to Boston25 News.
