Rabbi William Gershon from dallas, president of the Rabbinical Association of the conservative movement will give the prayer for israel. And rabbi fred reiner, chair of the atid Legal Society of the central conference of american rabbis will give the prayer for the United States, and they will help us hold up our hands as a unified people in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in israel. And a great thing about rabbi matonky who is going to go first. As they lead us in the prayers, theyre going to do it quite quickly because we dont have that much time today. And thats not easy for rabbis. Thats hard for rabbis. At this historic gathering of solidarity and support, we have to pause for a moment for the memorial prayer for naftali, gilad, ayali who were kidnapped and murdered for so reason other than they were jew
After me, we appreciate that they have all strongly supported israels right to defend itself. We also appreciate their efforts to help israel achieve a sustainable ceasefire. And i speak directly for my Prime Minister here. The criticism of secretary kerry for his good faith efforts to advance a sustainable ceasefire is unwarranted. [applause] there is broad understanding between israel and the United States about the principles for a sustainable ceasefire, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the United States to advance that goal and a durable solution to the problems in gaza. The demilitarization in gaza is critical if any ceasefire is to prove durable. Hamas must not be allowed to rebuild its war machine. Effective mechanisms must be put in place to assure that cement is not used to build terror tunnels, iron is not used to manufacture rockets and chemicals are not used to fuel explosives.
