Former Gov. Stephens remembered for optimism, skills communicating

Former Montana Gov. Stan Stephens, a longtime state legislator and 1996 inductee to the Montana Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame, died April 3 in Kalispell after a period of declining health. He was 91.  Stephens was remembered Monday for his unflinching optimism, skills as a communicator and bitter fights with the Democratic legislative branch. Stephens had broken a 20-year string of Democratic governorships when he was elected in 1988. He served one term in the governor s office, bowing out of his reelection bid in 1992 due to health concerns. In his wake, Republican governors Marc Racicot and Judy Martz followed, while the GOP flourished in the Legislature.

Of bad weather. what we saw was actually fairly good weather. it was partly cloudy. there was a full moon. it wouldn t have been a problem, i think, for airplanes to strike in the area. and this is a complaint you hear not just in misrata but in the east as well that nato uses the weather as an excuse, but the weather, it changes a lot. sometimes in one area you can have a sandstorm in the morning. in the afternoon it s bright, sunny, and clear. the feeling is that they say they are providing information about targets to nato, but the problem is that this information is relayed back to an operation center in ben ghazi and, from there to the nato command, and somehow along the way the message is simply getting lost or aren t acted upon in a timely manner. that sounds confusing and unfocused. ben wedeman, bob marks, bob
