Awards' return celebrate industry's resilience and innovation

Premium Content Subscriber only Mackay Whitsunday tourism operators are gearing up for state awards of a different vibe in 2021 as the industry celebrates resilience through COVID-19. Queensland Tourism Industry Council chief executive Daniel Gschwind said the return of the Queensland Tourism Awards was a “significant milestone” for the industry which had worked hard to rebuild. “Tourism remains a driving force for regional economies and communities across Queensland, accounting for one in nine Queensland jobs and nearly one in six jobs in Far North Queensland,” Mr Gschwind said. He said 2020 was “undeniably” a tough year but the industry took it in its stride with the number of Queenslanders holidaying in their own state soaring by 12 per cent in December 2020 compared to the period the year prior.

Drowning a leading cause of death for children under five

Premium Content About every three weeks, one Australian child under the age of five dies from drowning. A 16-month-old girl from the Mackay region had a close call earlier this month after she was found facedown in a Mirani pool. She was taken to Townsville Hospital and was released two days later. Over the Australian summer, a Royal Life Saving Society of Australia report shows more than one person will drown every single day. Now the Mackay Regional Council has urged residents to become water wise with Christmas just around the corner. Queensland law states all wading pools and spas that can be filled to a depth of 300mm of water or more must have appropriate fencing.
