The Court also held that the elections cannot be put on hold till restoration of statehood in the region and directed the Election Commission of India to take steps to conduct elections in J&K by September 30, 2024.
Omar said that development and religion were non-issues in the Kargil elections and voting was held as a referendum against the decision of the Union Government to bifurcate the erstwhile state of J&K and the abrogation of Article 370.
