Major global health, humanitarian organizations convene to welcome Entry Into Force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

On the eve of the Entry Into Force of the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), leaders of six top international health and humanitarian organizations will convene for the first time to address their roles in advancing the prohibition of nuclear weapons. The live discussion will take place online at 14:00-15:10 GMT on Thurs (Jan 21), followed by a press availability forum at 15:15 GMT.
A joint statement, to be released when the event opens, asserts that, “The climate crisis and COVID-19 pandemic have brought into sharp relief the crucial need for timely international cooperation driven by evidence and expert warnings, to safeguard the health and security of people. Nuclear weapons are human-made, so the solution to the threat lies entirely within our hands.” ....

Coronavirus: Commission puts forward rules on rapid antigen tests and secures 20 million tests for member states

Following up on the Council conclusions of 11 December, the Commission has adopted a proposal for a Council recommendation on a common framework for the use, validation and mutual recognition of rapid antigen tests. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, diagnostic testing has been rapidly evolving, demonstrating its central role in outbreak control. The recommendations put forward by the Commission will ensure the uniform use, validation and recognition of rapid antigen tests in the EU.
The Commission has also today signed a framework contract with Abbott and Roche allowing the purchase of over 20 million rapid antigen tests for up to €100 million, financed by the Emergency Support Instrument (ESI). From early 2021, these tests will be made available to member states, as part of the EU strategy to COVID-19 tes ....
