Starting the process of picking out ewe lambs for breeding at weaning time

June 25, 2021, 6:10 am In a Teagasc Ovicast episode, Tomás O’Leary, a sheep farmer from Co. Kerry who is part of the Better Farm Sheep Programme, spoke about the process of picking out ewe lambs for breeding on his farm. Tomás warned about being too selective when it comes to picking potential ewe lambs for breeding, and said that the process of beginning to pick out potential ewe lambs for breeding on his farm starts at weaning time. He aims to pick out 70-80 ewe lambs, with the intention of ending up with 50 for the following breeding season. Tomás added that he has noticed over the years, a big difference in performance from weaning to October.

February 21, 2021 1:00 pm On Wednesday last (February 17), David McLaughlin a participant in the Better Farm Sheep Programme spoke at the Teagasc Hill Sheep Conference. David was joined by his Teagasc advisor John Cannon on the night to discuss how the farm has progressed since joining the programme in 2008. David runs both a hill and lowland flock of ewes as well as keeping 17 autumn-calving suckler cows. The farm is broken up into three main blocks, consisting of both hill and lowland (green) ground. The breakdown is as follows:  Home farm: 9.55 adjusted hectares (green land/improved hill ground); Hill farm: 14.74 adjusted hectares (green land/improved hill) and 120ha of hill;

First of 2 virtual Teagasc Hill Sheep Conferences taking place this evening

February 17, 2021 2:39 pm The Teagasc Virtual Hill Sheep Conference will take place across two evenings this week. The first one takes place this evening, Wednesday, February 17, at 8:00pm. The second conference is then taking place tomorrow evening at the same time – Thursday, February 18. A number of topics will be discussed over the two evenings, which include looking at the performance of a hill farm involved in the Better Farm Sheep Programme, breeding, health and monitoring body condition in pregnant ewes. What’s on the agenda tonight? Coming up at tonight’s conference, viewers will hear from David McLaughlin from Donegal, who is a participant in the Better Farm Sheep Programme since 2008 and his Teagasc advisor John Cannon. An insight into how the farm has progressed since David joined the programme will be discussed.
