Loneliness at Christmas is traditionally the preserve of the less fortunate. Every year, those of us who live cossetted in the crisp warmth of a loving family, attainable goals and things in the diary to look forward to feel a guilty sadness about the hardships of “other people”.
This year, though, things are different. Many will spend Christmas alone, having been banned from seeing their nearest and dearest by the Government. Some will break the rules out of desperation (in a recent survey, a quarter confessed to flouting restrictions to seek company for the sake of their well-being). Millions will see in the New Year feeling anxious, exhausted and struggling to be positive about 2021. In short, we have plunged into a mental health crisis
