Students were able to learn about the benefits the fish bring two local ecosystems.
Saturday was the final step in the students salmon tending journey, releasing them into the Platte River.
They were able to release 83 salmon.
Benzie Central students say learning about the salmon and caring for them was rewarding, but it came with its challenges.
“I did not expect to be splashed every time we fed them and I definitely didn’t expect the release to be this hard,” said 7th grader, Moraya Mosher. “We’ve dropped a few fish this entire time, I honestly just thought it was going to be the release.”

On April 17, Marion elementary students who are involved with the SEEDS After School Program and their families gathered at the Marion Mill Pond for a day of fishing, fun and learning. Trout Unlimited also supplied a variety of displays and activities to engage children in learning about fish and their habitats including a stream-table to teach about maintaining clean watersheds and a work table for identifying macroinvertebrates in the water.

th graders helping the ecosystem sounds a bit fishy… have we got a story for you.
Students from Benzie Central Middle School have been raising Chinook salmon in their classroom since this past fall. It’s part of the DNR’s “Salmon in the Classroom” program, where students learn about the Great Lakes watershed. They’ll be releasing the salmon into the Platte River this weekend.
Seventh Grade Science Teacher Marc Alderman says, “By connecting our students to their home place it really helps develop that love and caring of their environment and wanting to care about the ecological things we talk about…. invasive species, climate change, really being able to see that in their own backyard and having that connection of raising these salmon helps them connect to their local watershed.”
