A fire to a Bend facility caused $20,000 damage but didn't cause any disruptions Sunday. Bend Police arrived first to find a fire on the exterior of the building, identified as the West Bend Sewer Lift Station. Fire crews arrived around 6:40 a.m. and were able to keep the fire spread into the building to a minimum. Bend Utility Department was contacted and representatives responded. This building pumps waste collected from much of the west side of Bend out to the treatment plant on McGrath Rd. By keeping the fire primarily contained to the exterior, the operations of the building have been kept intact. A loss of this station could've resulted in a loss of sewer capacity for a large part of town and possible discharge in the river. Crews are working at the facility today to ensure the fire is cleaned up and the building is kept safe. According to Bend Fire, it appears the fire was caused by a propane space heater associated with an outdoor sleeping area set up by unknown perso
