NJ councilman pushes LGBTQ issues in Montclair with plans for Pride Festival, new laws

When Montclair Councilor-at-large Peter Yacobellis was 17 and discovering his identity as a gay man, he got some devastating messages from society.
At his church one day, he suddenly found himself at the altar, surrounded by the congregation, who were trying to pray the gay out of him.
He then enlisted in the Air Force, figuring it would straighten him out. After he violated the military s Don t Ask, Don t Tell policy by confessing his confused feelings about his sexuality to a chaplain, he was discharged, screamed at and told he would never amount to anything, he said.
On Wednesday, with the easing of coronavirus limits, movie theaters in New Jersey can open to larger audiences, just in time for summer blockbuster season.
Although the state has ended set capacity limits at movie theaters, restaurants, and other indoor gathering sites, mask and social distancing regulations will stay in place to ensure that people are six feet apart.
It s good news for not only major movie chains, but also smaller local theaters that have weathered shutdowns and partial shutdowns. Those that survived, that is.
For movie lovers venturing back to the local cinema, here s the scoop on which theaters are gone, which are still here, and what changes you can expect.
Bellevue Theatre, a Montclair landmark, to reopen
After being closed for four years, the historic Bellevue Theatre in Montclair has announced plans to reopen. The Bellevue first opened on May 13, 1922, and operated continuously for 95 years before being shuttered in 2017. According to a press release, the refurbished theater will offer “a diverse spectrum of film programming, including studio, independent, and international releases, and providing much-needed space for live entertainment such as musical performances, as well as film festival screenings, lectures, and receptions.” After renovation there will be four separate theaters for movies, live performances, and events.
“I am delighted we are working to reopen Bellevue Theatre.
