Work begins to replace dangerous Bayou Chevreuil Bridge in Vacherie
Work has begun to replace the Bayou Chevreuil Bridge in Vacherie, just north of the Lafourche Parish boundary.
The narrow, two-lane bridge has been the site of a number of crashes over the years, including a head-on collision in 2015 that killed two Vacherie women and sparked a push among residents and officials to replace the span with a wider one.
Work on the $11.6 million project will cause intermittent lane closures on La. 20 near the bridge from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 20-29, the state Transportation Department said Wednesday. Motorists will still have access to travel the roadway but should anticipate delays as flaggers facilitate and direct traffic, the agency said in a news release. These closures are needed as construction crews mobilize equipment and install material.
