In a history-making announcement, the University of Portland (UP) has appointed its 21st president. Robert Kelly, PhD, most recently vice president, special assistant, and clinical professor at Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland, becomes the first lay president and African American to lead UP in its 121-year history. Board of Regents Chair, Thomas Arndorfer, introduced Kelly to the university community during an outdoor announcement event today in front of the campus’s Chapel of Christ the Teacher.

She was reportedly abducted by unidentified armed men on April 5 from the small home she shared with two other members of her congregation, the Marianites of Holy Cross. Tennyson, 83, was the only one of the sisters kidnapped during the assailants invasion of the home, said Sister Ann Lacour, the current Marianite congregational leader. Lacour said she believes the gunmen may have been looking for money and medicine. Lacour told the Clarion.
