Former shipyard worker David Wright to host 'Decarbonising Britain' talk

A FORMER Barrow shipyard worker is set to speak on the Green Energy Challenge. Energy requirements all over the world have been undergoing the most radical change in generations as the demand to reduce the use of fossil fuel has grown.This topic will be the subject of a lecture to the Barrow & District Association of Engineers (BDAE) by David Wright who has titled his talk “Decarbonising Britain – The Engineering Challenge”. David, who originally worked in Barrow Shipyard as an Electrical designer, joined National Grid in 1993 and is currently their Chief Engineer. He has held senior management positions including Director of Electricity Transmission. David is also a Chartered Engineer & Fellow of both the IET and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Unseen photos from Sankey Family Photography Collection unveiled

AN exhibition showcasing the work of a family of pioneering photographers has been extended after the discovery of new photos. Edward Sankey and his sons Raymond and Eric ran a photographic business in Barrow from the 1890s to the 1960s. The family captured thousands of unique photographs, documenting life in Furness and beyond over an 80 year period between 1890 and 1970. Former pub landlord and shipyard worker from Barrow died due to industrial disease

A FORMER shipyard worker was pursuing a claim for asbestos exposure shortly before his death, an inquest heard. Patrick Joseph Loughran died at the age of 83 on October 4 last year a few months after receiving the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma, the coroner s court in Cockermouth was told. He died as a result of industrial disease due to asbestos exposure in Barrow Shipyard and the Ironworks, a coroner ruled. Mr Loughran had launched a claim for asbestos exposure from his time working as a engineer in the shipyard, the inquest was tod. For this he had to write an in-life statement to specify where he may have come into contact with asbestos, a leading cause for malignant mesothelioma.
