Mourning 3 million deaths globally, Student Government to host COVID-19 memorial

Summer is on the horizon and final exams are nearing at the University of Miami, but for newly-elected Student Government President Landon Coles and the rest of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council, the end of the spring semester calls for a moment of reflection. Roughly a year after the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the globe and transformed every aspect of society, the DEI Council will honor the three million lives lost with an end-of-semester memorial. The memorial is scheduled to take place on April 27 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the Coral Gables campus Foote Green. There will be a maximum capacity of 150 people, which includes university students, faculty and staff.

Photo credit: UMAB Despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus, University of Miami Alternative Breaks (UMAB) hosted its first in-person day of service of the year. “It was really frustrating because usually we do these really huge fall and spring break trips that we unfortunately had to cancel,” said Bao Duong, the co-chair of UMAB. “But the idea that we were able to have a day of service and really get people to bond and associate with the cause and with the local community meant a lot to me.”

Discussion focuses on amplifying AAPI voices, addressing anti-Asian violence

By Ashley A. Williams 04-01-2021 The Student Government and the Office of the President hosted a second Courageous Conversations, an online series event, dedicated to providing an outlet for honest dialogue about the difficulties the Asian American Pacific Islander community has been facing. Bao Duong’s message was clear: the eight lives lost six of whom were Asian women at three Atlanta-area spa businesses last month were more than just a number. “I know sometimes victims can be summarized as a statistic, when really we are talking about such beautiful people and it’s important to recognize that,” Duong said. She commented that she was honored to be the only undergraduate panelist on Wednesday evening during the second installment of Courageous Conversations, an online event designed by the Office of the President and Student Government to build community and find solutions to topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
