American Magic s boat Patriot is on the water again, a week and a half after capsizing during a race.
The New York Yacht Club, which owns American Magic, has been issued a $200 fine after one of its vessels had a close call with an Auckland ferry. The America s Cup vessel was found to have been exceeding five knots within 50 metres of another vessel. The incident occurred during a pre-race practice run in September 2020, where the United States boat Defiant swung narrowly past a ferry bound for Waiheke Island. Under Maritime New Zealand’s collision prevention rules, any alteration of course or speed – or both – to avoid collision must be large enough to be readily apparent to another vessel.
