Local Matters - Call for water take consents review as lake levels plunge

Call for water take consents review as lake levels plunge Brent Morrissey says Lake Tomarata’s water level usually reaches within half a metre of the barrier’s edge on the shore during summer. The barrier was built to provide a shallow area for children to swim, but there is currently nothing for them to swim in. Calls for Auckland Council to reassess groundwater take consents in Tomarata and Te Arai are growing in volume as local lakes suffer. Former Auckland Regional Councillor Brent Morrissey has lived next to Lake Tomarata for 25 years and says he has never seen the water level so low.

Support shown for continuance of Waiheke Governance Pilot

Source: Auckland Council A report evaluating a governance pilot running on Waiheke over the last three years has been released this week by Auckland Council’s Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU). The pilot was set up in late 2017 after Auckland Council’s 2016 Governance Framework Review revealed that local boards did not feel sufficiently empowered to fulfil their role. Its purpose was to trial the impact of giving greater decision-making authority to Waiheke Local Board and to provide further support to the board. The report looks at the results of the pilot using interviews with Waiheke Local Board members and staff from Auckland Council and Council-Controlled Organisations (CCOs) like Auckland Transport (AT), alongside surveys of the Waiheke community.
