The british government has authorised the border force to turn back small boats carrying migrants across the english channel from france. It marks a new approach by the home secretary, priti patel. Up to this point, migrants found in english waters have been brought back to the uk mainland to be processed. She has also threatened to withold £54 mllion of funding which the uk pays to france to patrol their side of the channel. The french interior minister said his country would not be blackmailed and uk plans to return boats were in breach of maritime law. This is the english channel, the stretch of water separating the uk from the continent. In the past week alone, over 1500 people have crossed on small boats and dinghies.
