There were two powerful movements in iran, both of which worried the United States, but one more than the other. There was a communist insurgency in iran. We worried a lot about that. We sided the shah of iran in part because he crushed that communist dissent in iran. I dont think most american political elites thought too much about the islamic dissidents in that state. It was kind of off our radar.
