good evening, rachel, this raises an interesting artistic question, and that is what the discussion is cameras in the courtroom has been going on for a while. they re in almost all courtrooms in america, and the place where they re not allowed are in federal courts. and because we don t allow them in federal courts, we still have some court artists left. who are doing this work, and my worry about cameras in the federal courts is what happens to that body of art? and i have some wonderful pieces from courtrooms from decades ago that i treasure. i don t know what the future is if, for that, if we don t have cameras in federal courts. i was thinking about that today. as a journalist, i want cameras in the courts, because i want more materials, as a citizen, i m not sure that i do. you re right about losing that as a job. a thing that people need to be good at in our country. i remember one of the things we actually prepped when we talked about art lien today was during the tr
Court justices themselves at work. arthur lien started work as a corn artist in 1976 he s an unparalleled talent and a very niche and important part of public life. he was the only quorum artist allowed into the first military tribunals at guantánamo. and the early days of the pandemic he adapted to virtual supreme court proceedings by getting lawyers to send him photos of themselves making their oral arguments. he then turn those photos into sketches. this sketch captures stephen breyer s last case as a supreme court justice. it s also art s final sketch for the supreme court because he is also retiring at the end of the supreme court term. he is retiring at the height of his powers, so art lien you have no idea how much we have dependent on you all these years. happy retirement, mr. lien. great respect. that s going to do it for us tonight many hassan is going to be here tomorrow night i will see you again here monday. now the last word with lawrence o donnell.
A thing that people need to be good at in our country. i remember one of the things we actually prepped when we talked about art lien today was during the trump impeachment, it was art lien, the courtroom sketch artist, the guy who actually caught the fact that senator richard burr wasn t wearing socks during the impeachment proceedings. and with every camera, with all of the traditional impeachment proceedings, you had to take the courtroom sketch artist to notice something that potent and specific. and factor that into the way he was drawing the proceeding. how are we going to keep people that good an eye on proceedings like this unless we re turning them up to be young art liens. please, no one should misunderstand my position to be no cameras in federal courts so that we can have art for federal courts. it s just that not a bad argument. well, it s not a strong enough argument. it s just one of those things that i m very fond of that
