gun belonged to. it was a dad dropping his son off during his early morning program. he didn t realize the gun hell out of his pocket through a hole in his cargo pants. this incident had school officials and parents very worried. when monique heard there was a loaded gun at her child school she panicked. it s very scary. reporter: school authorities say the gun was discovered after 8:00 this morning were parents drop-off children for pre-carrot the back of rock crusher elementary school. apparent notice the weapon he contracted one of our employees who came out and secured the weapon. they thought the weapon was a pellet gun. reporter: they soon learned that was a pistol similar to this one. this areas where the gun was found. a custodian picked it up thinking it was a bb gun. he came over here put his hand over the fence and fired a shot into the ground. there were no children vicinity when that happened. children were inside but the weapon did discharge on campus.
watch as this trained fighter happened to be nearby to stop this group. i wasn t trying to be malicious in any way. it s just how i reacted to the situation. reporter: on valentine s day david west stop by this bradenton, florida brings to visit his girlfriend and as they spoke the suspect washed over, climbed on the counter and threatened the staff and said to give him oxycodone. he said he had a gun. he started reaching into his pants like he had a weapon that s when i did something to protect my girlfriend. reporter: so he walked over and took him down wrestling him in the aisle until he knocked him unconscious. the cook was this man and west pinned him down until the cops arrived. he was happy he protected his girlfriend but sad to see the young man badly drug addiction. when i was holding him down it hurt my heart. reporter: police don t encourage the behavior but are proud of west for helping out and offer tips if you choose to stop a don t hurt yourself and
while the shooting is offcamera, you can hear what happened next. [ gunfire ] reporter: immediately after the shooting, the sheriff defended his guys, claiming thompkins while handcuffed grabbed burden s gun, forcing burden to shoot him. tonight we know it didn t happen that way. in order for this to have happened, he has to have taken his hands, come around like this, been able to while handcuffed do this, do this, do this, and is then get the gun out. didn t happen. reporter: the sheriff tells me deputy burden seen here from his days as a st. petersburg police officer, acted contrary to law and fabricated the events of that night. and there was a good witness. deputy randall was there the entire time. and testified that dylan was mouthy, but he never offered any active resistance and never reached for or touched deputy burden s gun. reporter: the sheriff told me there was not a struggle for deputy burden to believe he was in any danger for his life. as for thochl
here earlier this month. when the passenger in the car started mouthing off, he was arrested. deputy bearden told the sheriff that thompkins holmes grabbed his gun while cuffed. the angle the deputy was at and is the angle that thompkins holmes was at, he was able to reach and is put his hand around the side and grab the deputy s gun. reporter: now the sheriff explains that couldn t have happened. in order for this to have happened, he has to have taken his hands, come around like this, been able to, while handcuffed, do this, do this, do this, and then get the gun out. didn t happen. reporter: deputy bearden shot thompkins holmes twice. bearden told investigators he felt thompkins holmes could kick, wound, or injure him. the sheriff does not believe man. i was hoping for a word from the former deputy. he s not available. is there anyone with the family that might be able to speak? nope. nope, we have no comment. reporter: i did reach out to thompkins holmes a
