Lobos Claim 11th-Straight Top-10 Finish in the NCAA DI Cross Country Championships

STILLWATER, Okla. The University of New Mexico women’s cross country season looked different than it has in years past due to the postponement of fall sports in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, the women continued their tradition of excellence, claiming sixth place at the NCAA DI Cross Country Championships with a total of 274 points. The sixth-place finish serves as the 11th-straight top-10 finish for the Lobos in the NCAA Championships. Three Lobos earned All-American honors on the day in Adva Cohen, Gracelyn Larkin, and men’s qualifier Abdirizak Ibrahim, who finished in 35th place. Similarly, the Lobos have the fifth-longest consecutive NCAA qualifying streak (13) in NCAA Cross Country Championship history. The women’s team is no stranger to streaks, as they won their 13th-straight Mountain West title a week before this race, the longest winning-streak in Mountain West History in any sport.

With a spread of 0:30, the Lobos finished with seven runners in the top-15, posting a total of 29 points. The women’s team, currently ranked third in the Nation in the most recent Women’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll, has held the Mountain West Championship title since 2008, a thirteen-year streak, the longest winning-streak in Mountain West history in any sport. “To continue our winning tradition for this many years is a testament to the drive and expectations that these women have to be great at the highest collegiate running level,” said head coach Joe Franklin.

The Lobos won the Battle Born Collegiate Cross Country Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev., with a total of 60 points and a spread of only 16 seconds from first runner until last. No. 6 Stanford, the runner-up, finished 25 points behind the Lobos. “It’s been 11 months since our last race and, wow, the women ran great. It is such a wonderful group of women that all want to be very good,” said Franklin. “The 16-second spread, one to five, reminds us a lot of our 2015 NCAA Championship team the lowest scoring team in modern history.”
