JCSD tax to increase 3.9 percent | News, Sports, Jobs

ethompson@lewistownsentinel.com MIFFLINTOWN – Residents of Juniata County can expect to see a 3.9 percent school tax increase if the budget is approved as proposed. Juniata County School District’s Business Manager, Richard Meily, presented the board of directors with budget projections for the 2021-22 school year during the board’s workshop meeting on Wednesday. Meily said administrators were able to completely eliminate the deficit by reducing some anticipated cyber school tuition. He said the budget currently shows $43.8 million in revenues and $43.8 million in expenses. The budget also includes the addition of two special education teachers which became necessary due to an influx of special education students.

JCSD board talks school reopening | News, Sports, Jobs

ethompson@lewistownsentinel.com MIFFLINTOWN – School leaders in Juniata County are concerned that going back to five-day in-person instruction could overwhelm teachers. Superintendent Gary Dawson explained to the district’s board of directors during its workshop meeting Wednesday that while COVID numbers continue to stay low and conditions seem right for bringing students back, that teachers would lose planning time for students participating in the hybrid remote education (HRE) program. “I think (going back to the classroom full time) is good for our kids socially. I think it’s good for our students educationally. I think it’s good for our community because it reinstates some confidence that our world is moving back to normalcy. I think there’s a lot of up sides,” he said.
