Forest Fires Sending Even More Smoke Into Missoula And Bitterroot
Smoke tells the story - Western Montana is filling up with area forest fire smoke. Air quality has been getting worse on a daily basis as the fires continue to grow and are joined by new lightning-caused blazes. Stage 2 fire restrictions (campfires prohibited) are becoming the norm.
In Idaho, the Snake River Complex is now over 102,000 acres and is near other large blazes in western Idaho and eastern Washington. The Dixie-Jumbo Fires are over 24,000 acres 60 miles west of the Bitterroot Valley, south of Grangeville, Idaho. At Lolo Pass, the thousand-acre Granite Pass Complex has caused closure of Lolo Pass Hot Springs and speed restrictions on US Highway 12 going over the pass into Idaho. About 30 miles north of Orofino, Idaho, the Cougar Rock Fire is over 3,360 acres in size.

Garnet Ghost Town Historic Site and the surrounding area remain closed on Sunday as fire crews continue battling the Anderson Hill Fire in Granite and Powell counties, one mile southeast of Garnet Ghost Town.
The Anderson Hill Fire was first reported on Thursday. Initially estimated to be 10 acres, it grew rapidly despite an initial aggressive attack from the air. Aerial mapping on Saturday put the fire s size at 599 acres. Montana DNRC had estimated the fire s size to be 1,000 acres on Friday.
According to InciWeb as of Sunday morning, Anderson Hill has burnt 647 acres and is 3 percent contained.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, county emergency services, and Joliet Volunteer Fire, the evacuation orders are placed on the Cole Creek Road and Stene Road areas. Road closures include Cole Creek Road from Highway 212 to Bellion Road, all of Bellion Road, and both entrances of Farewell Road.
As of the press release at noon, no structure losses were reported.
Fire and county officials say the fire was caused by lightning and is burning about 2,500 acres with 0% containment.
According to a Facebook post by the Red Lodge Fire Rescue a Red Lodge Fire engine was burned over Friday while fighting the Harris Fire. The post says the two-person engine crew was attacking the fire when the wind suddenly shifted and the fire overtook them. One of the firefighters who suffered severe burns was flown to Salt Lake City for treatment.
