a vigil was held here on 9/11 to honor all of them. i am looking at 11 years that he has been gone and it seems like yesterday. sergeant michael kelly decided to join the national guard right after 9/11. he was in afghanistan for 69 days and was killed in an attack . reporter: he was just 26 years old. as far as memorial day and all that sort of thing goes, every day is memorial for us. there is not a day that we don t think about him and what he stood for. in our eyes, we are proud of him. he is a hero. reporter: sergeant kelly was the third oldest of four. he was the funniest guy. he was great. he had the best sense of humor. reporter: the kelly s are now a gold star family, honored for their loved one s sacrifice. they joined dozens in the sacrifice.
