John Kivela It’s a project meant to honor the late state representative, who was on his own path of recovery from an addiction to alcohol. Called the John Kivela House, it will be a safe space for up to six men who have been sober for at least 30 days. They’ll receive therapy, get a job and undergo intensive case management. Journal Staff Writer MARQUETTE For those looking to get outside this winter while raising awareness of mental health, the Great Lakes Recovery Center is holding the LIVE 2021 Snowman Contest, with entries accepted through Monday. “We hope that the LIVE Snowman Contest will help to generate conversation around suicide and mental health, which will help to reduce stigma,” said Amy Poirier, GRLC Foundation coordinator. “Families can open the conversation as they build the snowman. “And as people vote for their favorite snowman, we hope they will also ‘like’ the page and take a look around.” There are multiple reasons for the contest, organizers said. For one, studies show outdoor activities can be beneficial for mental health. Furthermore, the contest can also help spread the word about the center’s LIVE an acronym standing for love, include, value and engage campaign, which encourages engagement in self-care and compassion. ....
