hello. i m here in philadelphia, at the gilder lehrman study for american studies of the university of pennsylvania. i ve spent the week with an amazing group of educators from all over the, country brought together under the auspices of the gilder lehrman institute of american history. this has been supported by the labor company of philadelphia and the pugh center for arts and heritage, through their program, redrawn, history indigenous and colonial perspectives on america. we spent some time talking about how we might redraw early american history. we try to do that by suggesting that one productive way redrawing that history is to think in terms of a complicated and ever shifting set of contests among the three sets of actors, three sets of actors we have called native peoples, settlers or settler colonists, and european empires. now, it is probably obvious to folks what we mean when we think about native peoples, although it should not be that obvious except to stress

andrew carroll. the gentlemen for of several new york times bess bell severals including war letters, letters of a nation and behind the lines and edded on a pro-bono basis operation homecoming, iraq, afghanistan, and the home front, in the worlds of u.s. crops and their families. which inspired the film of the same name. in 1998 andrew founded the legacy protect that honors veterans and active duty troops by preserving wartime confidence. andrew has traveled to all 50 states including been countries including afghanistan and iraqment and. andrew donated this massive collection free of charge to chapman university, which is also where roger and my friend went to school. the legacy project has been renamed, the center for american war letters, and is now part of chapman university, andrew serve as the centers director. andrew is embarking on the million letters campaign to seek out and preserve at least one million war relate correspondents from every american conflict. he h
the book is fascinating and for sale outside. and it tells the story of the american revolution that is rarely, if ever, told. we re also grateful because holger did a lot of research for the book here. he was a research fell flow 201-2013. the new york public library has a short-term research fellowship that supports scholars from outside the new york metropolitan area who ared gauged in graduate level and it s always our pressure to highlight the work done here. i want to quickly say that i had the distinct honor of working under lewis lappum at lappum s quarterly and one our my great professional and penalize so i couldn t be more happy to have him on hand to steer the conversation. he is recording this for an episode of his pod cast, and i prepare your thes for q & a. so join me in welcoming lewis lapham and holger hoock.
