Judith Thoreson | Kossuth County Advance

  June 18, 1935 - October 11, 2023   Memorial Services for Judith Murtagh Thoreson, 88, of Okoboji, formerly of Algona, will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Algona at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023. A reception with the family present will be held following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. A Celebration of Judy’s Life will be held in June of 2024 at Okoboji.

Heitland recognized as outstanding educator | Kossuth County Advance

  ALGONA An award named for long-time Algona Community School Foundation board member, David Shumway, was given to Brad Heitland for his exemplary career as a teacher. Barb Teeter of the Algona Community School Foundation made the announcement at a teachers’ workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 22. Following the presentation, Heitland shared his thoughts on successful teaching.

Community invests in education | Kossuth County Advance

ALGONA The Algona Community School Foundation annual golf outing and silent auction event held July 17 was another success. It brought in just under $50,000 to the foundation, which uses the money to fund classroom enrichment activities and provide scholarships. “The weather was perfect, the participation was excellent, and the results should provide funding for next year’s wish lists,” stated Foundation Consultant Barb Teeter.

School Foundation promotes professional growth | Kossuth County Advance

ALGONA Shelby Berte, middle school family and consumer sciences teacher, has been awarded the 2023 Dorothy Laird Professional Development Award. Laird was a highly-respected kindergarten teacher in the Algona schools. After her death in 2008, her son Max Laird and his wife Gayle endowed a $10,000 gift to the Algona Community School Foundation to foster continued growth in ways to become better teachers.
